News Stories

Recent incidents in Australia, where three individuals died after consuming wild mushrooms, have generated significant attention regarding the safety of mushrooms.

Sharn Steadman, an educator from Manaaki Mushrooms in Te Puke New Zealand, emphasized that mushrooms should not be feared. Despite their negative reputation, they contribute positively to the world.

In an interview with NZME, Steadman noted that the suspected mushroom poisoning deaths in Australia have sparked both increased interest in and apprehension towards fungi.

"News stories can provoke fear, leading to instinctive reactions," she stated. "Some individuals even advise against touching mushrooms, but it is safe to handle them. Harm only occurs when mushrooms are ingested."

Foraging for wild Mushrooms

Steadman also mentioned that reports of mushroom poisoning could deter people from foraging. She advised that anyone interested in foraging for wild mushrooms should approach it with a sense of responsibility.
